Missing 9-year-old
turned over to police

Family members turned 9-year-old Calvin Sabanal over to police last night, ending a weeklong search for the missing child.

Three adults in a red pickup truck seized Calvin on Feb. 4 from a Child Protective Services van, police said.

Attorneys for the Sabanal family contacted police yesterday and arranged for Calvin's mother and father to turn over Calvin and his 17-year-old sister at the main police station, CrimeStoppers Detective Letha DeCaires said.

The two were turned over about 7 p.m. in good health, DeCaires said. They were placed into CPS custody.

Calvin's father, 42-year-old Barry Sabanal, was arrested on an outstanding traffic warrant and released on bail, she said.

Police publicized the case Wednesday.

"Our goal was to get out enough information to get Calvin back," DeCaires said.

Police continue to investigate. Family members, including Barry Sabanal, were initially suspected of taking the child.

DeCaires said she did not know where Calvin was during the past week, or whether his hair was dyed blonde, as some tipsters had suggested to police.
