Nighttime Valentine
It's a busy Valentine's Day weekend clubwise, with visiting Northern California band Double Funk Crunch taking the party to Anna Bannanas tonight and tomorrow. The all-purpose band puts on a full show, with costume changes, choreography and theatrics. Their press release says that "whether you prefer '70s diva anthems, funky old-school grooves, '80s power pop or cutting-edge cuts by today's artists, Double Funk Crunch delivers ... and then some!" (Believe it -- their repertoire includes nearly 80 songs.) Doors open at 9 p.m. at the Moiliili club, with a cover for those 18 and over.
Sisters In Sound celebrate their first anniversary tomorrow night at Indigo downtown with their monthly "Escape" event. Plus, it'll be DJ Toki's birthday (age never to be revealed) and the return of DJ Zita, who's relocated to the Bay area. Local world-music band Mundo Muzak will be playing, along with guest percussionists. Things kick off at 9 p.m. with free admission to those 21 and over before 10:30 and $8 afterward.
California jam band (and Jack Johnson's friends) ALO is wrapping up their island gigs with appearances at Haleiwa Joe's tonight and Bikini Cantina at the Aloha Tower Marketplace on Sunday night.
For those who like to walk on the dark side this Valentine's, there's the Dungeon at Galaxy Nightclub near the Kalakaua-Kapiolani intersection and "The BlackHeart's Ball" at the newly named Mercury at 1154 Fort Street Mall. "It's not about love ... it's about lust. It's not what happens in the bedroom ... it's what happens in the back room." Anyway, the promoters are throwing this party "for those who are just fed up with the commercialization of Valentine's Day." It's supposed to be a classy event. Cover is $7.
