Yellow Jackets on top at Waikoloa

WAIKOLOA >> Led by Nicolas Thompson's 8-under 64, Georgia Tech took a 10-stroke lead going into today's second round of the 14th Annual Taylor Made/Waikoloa Resort Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Kings Course.

Thompson was one of four Yellow Jackets to shoot under par. John Poucher of UCLA and Washington's Brock Mackenzie were tied for second at 68.

UCLA was in second place with a team 282, followed by Washington and Arizona State tied for third at 283. Host UH Hilo was in ninth place at 289, with UH Manoa last in the 20-team field at 306.

The top Vulcan golfer was Nick Mast at 70, while the Rainbow Warriors were led by Matt Kodam,a who shot a 2-over 74.

The 54-hole tournament concludes tomorrow.

Sapolu named to Hula Bowl Maui board

Former Farrington High School, University of Hawaii and San Francisco 49ers offensive line standout Jesse Sapolu highlights the Hula Bowl Maui's new board of directors.

Other members are: Mike Nobriga, Damien Faria, Jim Brennan, Al Nakatani, and Hula Bowl owner Dick Schaller.

Next year's Hula Bowl will be played at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku on either Jan. 15 or 22, Schaller said.

Last month's game will be televised in Japan on March 24, he added.

Seasiders hold steady in regional poll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team maintained its regional ranking despite losing to Hawaii-Hilo last week.

The Seasiders (17-3) are second to Cal State San Bernardino (18-1) in the West Region of the NCAA Division II poll. The regional poll decides which teams receive bids to the NCAA Division II tournament in March. The top eight teams earn tournament berths.

Speed and quickness clinics at UH

Hawaii coaches Rich Miano and Mel deLaura will host their annual series of speed and quickness clinics on the Manoa campus. The first clinic is Feb. 21 and the last is May 23. Clinics will be held at 10 a.m. for participants ages 7-12 with clinics at 1:30 p.m. for players 13 and older.
