Mercury plans ‘Black
Hearts Ball’ Saturday
I THINK I've finally made up my mind -- I'm going to boycott Valentine's Day this year.
OK, maybe it's because I still don't have a date for Saturday night, but it'll be just too depressing to go out and see all those couples acting lovey-dovey while I'm getting up close and personal with a stiff drink or two. Or three.
Philana Bouvier is another person who's sick of conventional Valentine's Day celebrations, so she's throwing a "Black Hearts Ball" at the Mercury (formerly known as The Loft and Ground Level) that evening instead.
"I've been single for a very long time, and I'm sick of the dating scene," she told me during a recent visit to the Star-Bulletin newsroom. The way Bouvier sees it, those of us looking for that special someone at the club "don't fall in love with someone" when they go out.
"You fall in lust," she said.
And as it says on the invitation for her party on Saturday, "it's not about what happens in the bedroom; it's what happens in the back room."
Doors open for the "Black Hearts Ball" at 9 p.m. Saturday; cover is $7. Call 479-0270 ...
IT'S BEEN quite a month so far for Willie K. Last weekend, he was featured on ESPN while performing with Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom during the Pro Bowl's halftime show. This Sunday, he'll play with the Makaha Sons for the first time ever.
"I was having a great time," Willie said of last weekend's appearance at Aloha Stadium. "What was really good about it was that some of the braddahs that was watching the football game at the military bases were calling up to congratulate (us)."
On Sunday he'll jump on a plane to Lanai to take part in a 10th-anniversary taping of "Emme's Island Moments" at the Manele Bay Hotel. Willie gave host Emme Tomimbang the idea to visit the neighbor islands and will accompany her to each one to participate in an "Island Moments" concert series that's in the works.
Portions of the Lanai concert will be featured in Tomimbang's 10th-anniversary special, set to air in October. As for Willie, the rest of the year looks to be pretty busy for the Maui resident -- he's going to Japan next month, has a benefit golf tournament set for April and a martial arts tournament in the works for June, and also plans to visit the East Coast, Europe and other parts of Asia later this year. It's quite a change for a guy who spent the last few years performing just one night a week.
"That's my calling now. I want to help people as much as I can," he said ...
