ILH teams get top seeds
in softball and girls soccer
Kamehameha's softball team and Punahou's soccer team were named the top seeds in their respective state tournaments yesterday.
Both teams went undefeated in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play this season.
Punahou, the defending state soccer champion, did not allow a goal in its 10 league games.
Kamehameha was runner-up to Kailua in softball last year, a year after winning the state title.
The girls soccer tournament will be held at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park starting Wednesday. The opening day's winners play against the seeded teams Thursday.
After Punahou, the other seeds are Mililani of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, Maui champion Baldwin and Big Island champion Hawaii Prep.
The tourney winds up Saturday with the championship game at 8 p.m.
The boys soccer state tournament takes place next week.
The softball tournament also begins Wednesday --at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium --and for the first year is broken into two divisions. Softball is one of three sports with a Division II bracket this year (football and girls basketball are the others).
Defending champion Kailua opens play Wednesday against Baldwin. A win would earn the Surfriders a date with No. 4 seed Waiakea of the Big Island the next day. The tournament's other seeds are No. 2 Kapolei of the OIA and No. 3 Lahainaluna of Maui.
The Division I softball final is also slated for 8 p.m. Saturday.
The field for the inaugural Division II softball tournament consists of University of the ILH, Honokaa from the Big Island, Kalaheo of the OIA and Lanai of the Maui Interscholastic League.
Play opens Friday with the Lady 'Bows and Dragons in the 2 p.m. opener. The Mustangs and Pine Lasses follow at 4 p.m.
The winners meet at 6 p.m. Saturday.
