Bauer gives UH
first win

The pitcher strikes out nine
in seven innings as the Warriors
blank Cal State Northridge 10-0

Ricky Bauer struck out a career-high nine batters and scattered six hits over seven innings to highlight the Hawaii Rainbows' first victory of the season last night at Murakami Stadium.

The 'Bows (1-4) made good use of seven hits and five walks in their run-scoring innings to defeat Cal State Northridge 11-0 in front of 1,191 fans.

"I don't know if you'll see Ricky any better," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "He had a great arm angle and pitched like he had something to prove after his last outing. He pitched like a veteran."

Trapasso revamped his lineup, with only leadoff batter Robbie Wilder, who had three hits, and cleanup hitter Jaziel Mendoza remaining in the same spots they were in Friday. Also, second baseman Schafer Magana, right fielder Greg Kish and third baseman Creighton Kahoali'i got starts, with Friday's third baseman, Rocky Russo, moving to designated hitter.

Bauer was touched for sharp singles with two outs on consecutive pitches to Michael Paulk and Jesse Perez in the second, but avoided trouble by getting Alberto Quintana on a slow grounder to first.

"The main difference from last week was that I got the ball down in the zone," said Bauer, who threw 66 strikes and 24 balls. "I got them to hit ground balls and let the defense do the job."

His teammates then began providing offensive support not seen before this year.

Hawaii took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Wilder's two-run, line-drive single to right that scored Andrew Sansaver -- on base with a walk -- and Kish -- who had bounced a single off CSUN third baseman Mark McCauley. Sansaver and Kish had moved into scoring position when Magana was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

The Rainbows followed up with their most productive inning of the season, a four-run third.

It started with a double to center by catcher Matt Inouye. On Mendoza's sharp grounder to short, Inouye scored. Mendoza went to second when Perez's throw went into the UH dugout.

CSUN starter Kyle Jean was replaced by Eddy Camacho and promptly walked Russo on a 3-1 pitch. Sansaver sacrificed the runners up a base and Russo scored on Kahoali'i's sacrifice fly to deep center.

Kish drew a free pass. He and Russo scored when Wilder hit a high but short fly ball to right-center field that touched down amid three Matadors for a double and a 6-0 UH lead.

UH added another run in the fourth. Brian Finegan led off with a ground single to left, took second on Inouye's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Russo's sacrifice fly to right.

What was discouraging for the Matadors and encouraging for the 'Bows was Bauer's pitching in the inning following the UH scoring frames. Bauer did not allow the Matadors (3-2) to retaliate with runs of their own. He retired the side in order in the third and fourth. In the fifth, the junior right-hander stranded Paulk at second after his leadoff double by fanning Perez, getting Quintana on a grounder to short and whiffing Raymond Ravago.

Wilder's two-out single to short left-center, his steal of second and Inouye's RBI single to right upped the UH lead to 8-0 after five innings.

Bauer did not walk a batter until the seventh, when Perez followed Paulk's leadoff double with a free trip to first. The runners stayed right where they were as Bauer retired the next three batters.

"He just dominated the day, went right after them," said Inouye. "He had a lot of life on his ball and his slider was his go-to pitch."
