Donnelly’s Irish wake
was filled with laughter

Dave Donnelly's Irish wake that drew a huge crowd at Murphy's Thursday was no sad affair. People roared with laughter as Tom Moffatt, Don Robbs, Bob Dye, Elissa Josephsohn, Ray Sweeney, Don Murphy, Hector Venegas, Tom Horton and Jimmy Borges recalled fun-filled times they had with the popular Star-Bulletin columnist. Singer Mihana Souza and her guitarist Bobby Young warmed up the crowd before emcee Moffatt called up speakers. Mihana was joined by singers Cathy Foy and Barry Yap. Fiddler Lisa Gomes performed. Borges also sang and was joined by Shari Lynn and the crowd on "There's No Business Like Show Business." Don Conover played keyboard. Dave's son Brendan accepted a $1,000 check from the Star-Bulletin to start a scholarship fund in Donnelly's name for the University of Hawaii Theater Department. Earlier, Brendan said he cut his long hair, which Dave did not like, and put some of it in his father's coffin before cremation. Bagpiper Larry Coleman closed out the night, which Dave would have loved ...

Barefoot in New York

You can take the girls out of Hawaii but you can't take Hawaii out of the girls. The last time Deico President Daynin Dashefsky was in New York, she and her P.R. rep Shari Nakakura could not get a cab. They walked 15 blocks in high heels to Ladies Home Journal and Teen Vogue where they were interviewed about Daynin's products. Their feet were raw with blisters. When the interviews were pau they still could not get a cab to get back to their hotel, 15 blocks away. So they took the heels off their blistered tootsies and walked all the way back barefooted, attracting many a stare. "Everyone was looking at us as if we were weird," said Nanakuli girl Daynin. She's off to New York next week for a Toy Fair where her products are displayed. Hopefully she and Shari will be able to catch cabs this time ...

Yes, there were a lotta great moves in the Super Bowl but Justin Timberlake's was the best attention-grabber when he pulled off the material covering Janet Jackson's right breast. But I can't see why the NFL is pulling *N Sync's JC Chasez from tomorrow's Pro Bowl halftime show because of that controversial action ... Mel Cabang stopped by last Saturday's Perry and Price show at John Dominis to promote his Feb. 20 "Make me Laugh 2" show at the Hawaiian Hut. Perry asked Mel how he kept his head so shiny and "Baldy" Cabang said, "I don't use a razor, I squeegee"... Ryan's annual Carnival Celebration, featuring food and drinks from South Florida that have Caribbean and Latin American flavors, is in full swing. The Opihi Pickers perform Wednesday; it's Kapena Feb. 18, and Ten Feet Feb. 24 ...

Baby Bostock's luau

Tim Bostock of Tim Bostock Productions and his wife, the former Melanie Holt, held quite a first birthday lu'au for their daughter Grace La'iokalehua at their Tantalus home last Saturday. Entertainment included Makana, Maunalua and Amy Hanaiali'i. Lilikala Kame'eleihiwa gave a genealogy chant. The food was catered by Sam Choy, with the exception of a 338-pound pig that was cooked in the back-yard imu. Bobby Ferreira and Nolan Brown took care of that big porker ...
