Pico tabbed to take over Campbell baseball

Former University of Hawaii infielder Rory Pico will coach the Campbell baseball team, according to Sabers athletic director Sam Delos Reyes.

Pico graduated from Campbell and was a member of the Sabers' Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball championship team in 1995.

He was an assistant under outgoing coach Lane Watankuki, who spent 20 years at the helm and stepped down for family reasons.

Pico is also a special education teacher at Campbell and served as a softball assistant coach.

"We're looking for our new coach to bring youth and enthusiasm into developing our program," Delos Reyes said. "We see him as a product of our community who student-athletes can identify with. He knows the needs of our community and our school and I expect the program to take off under his direction."

Kodama shoots 68 to get into Pearl Open

Matt Kodama and eight other golfers qualified for the Hawaii Pearl Open yesterday, setting the field at 190 players.

Kodama shot a 68. Koji Ikeda grabbed the final spot in a playoff with three other players after shooting a 74. Other qualifiers were Mitsuru Nitta, Gregg Omori, David Long, Hideaki Ueno, Tomonori Takayama, Joey Tadeo and Arnold Sano.

The Hawaii Pearl Open tees off February 6 after a pro-am tomorrow.

Islanders to hold tryouts

The Hawaiian Islanders will hold an open tryout on Feb. 22 at Saint Louis School.

The noncontact tryout for the arenafootball2 team is open for all positions. Participants will be tested in the 40-yard dash, four-corner agility drill, L-shuttle run and bench press of 225 pounds.

All participants are required to bring their own shoes (outdoor cleats are recommended) and proper workout attire.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and testing is scheduled for 10 a.m. A $25 fee (cash only) will be charged.

"We are looking for players who can compete at the professional level," Islanders coach Cal Lee said. "This is a legitimate opportunity for players to get noticed. We know there are talented athletes in Hawaii and we want the best players to compete at this level."

The Islanders begin their third season on March 27. The team went 11-7 last year and won the West Division championship.

Seasiders lose in Hilo

Ryan Abrahams scored 28 points and the Hawaii-Hilo basketball team made 20 of 21 free throws to beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 88-74 last night in Hilo.

The upset ended Brigham Young-Hawaii's school-record winning streak at 15 and stopped Hilo's five-game skid.

The Seasiders, who learned that they had climbed to No. 15 in the nation earlier in the day, blew a 13-point lead in the second half and were outscored 11-2 in the final two minutes.

Hilo had five players in double figures, including Justin Griffin's 19 points on a perfect night on nine tries from the line.

The Seasiders lost their first conference game of the season, dropping to 6-1, 16-3 overall, while the Vulcans improved to 4-5, 11-8 overall. It was BYUH's first loss to a Division II opponent.
