Cooking demos, food samples at building show

OK, so the Building Industry Association Home Building & Remodeling Show doesn't seem to have much to do with food, but what does every house have? A kitchen! And what do you do in a kitchen? Cook!

And so, the annual event always includes cooking demonstrations. The idea of meals-in-the-making apparently helps potential buyers make the connection: food, kitchen, build a house.

The show takes place tomorrow through Sunday at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

The SPAMmobile, a giant can of Spam on wheels, will be there. Pick up mini-Spam sandwiches and cookbooks outside the Galleria entrance; learn to make Spam muffins and kebabs on Saturday and Sunday from the SPAMmobile chef (yes, the SPAMmobile has its own chef).

Can you swing?

Diamond Head Theatre is holding auditions for its production of "Swing!," with roles for two female singers, two male singers, six female dancers and six male dancers.

Auditions will be held in the theater's rehearsal hall at 520 Makapuu Ave.:

Feb. 13: 7 p.m. for singers and 8:30 p.m. for dancers
Feb. 14: 2 p.m. for singers and 4 p.m. for dancers
Feb. 15: 2 p.m. for singers and 4 p.m. for dancers.

Performers should be prepared to sing a Broadway-style song (must bring sheet music in their own key), dance and read from the script. Swing dance experience is a plus, but not necessary. Swing couples are encouraged to audition and may present a routine. Scripts are available at the DHT box office but must be read on-site.

The production will run March 26 through April 11. Call 733-0277, ext. 309.

Pointers for dads

More than half of Hawaii's children live with two working parents. Another 20 percent live with a single parent, of which about 2 percent are single-parent fathers.

Single dads can get a little help raising children through a colorful brochure, "Dad Wanted -- All Hours, Great Benefits," offered by the University of Hawaii Center on the Family.

The brochure, which unfolds to become a poster, has a 10-point "Checklist for Fathers" with points such as: "I show my children that they are loved for who they are, not just for what they do"; "I am dependable. My children can count on me to do what I say I will do"; and "I encourage my children to reach for their dreams."

For a copy of "Dad Wanted," call 956-4132, download it from www.family.hawaii.edu or call the Hawaii Coalition For Dads at 841-2245.

Lahaina calling

If you live in or have ever lived in Lahaina, you're invited to the Lahaina Club Banquet taking place May 29 at the Ala Moana Hotel.

There'll be cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 for an evening of entertainment and reminiscence. Cost is $35.

The Lahaina Club is a nonprofit community club formed in 1974, open to all residents of Lahaina plus former residents, relatives of residents, and graduates and students of Lahainaluna.

Membership is scattered throughout the world, and the club's objective is to maintain community and family ties with Lahaina by providing an opportunity to get together at least once a year.

The banquet also provides an opportunity for the various classes to hold their reunions. This year, Lahainaluna's Class of 1944 will celebrate its 60th reunion. Contact Gerry Kane at 696-6872, Setsuko Tanaka at 737-2410, or Harumi Fujii on Maui, 808-661-0646.

Also, the Class of 1949 will mark its 55th reunion. Contact Dorothy Takizawa at 732-1777 or Yaeko Uyehara Hironaka at 235-1166.
