‘Rocky Point’ pilot takes off


The WB network has given the green light to start filming the Oahu-based pilot "Rocky Point," from writer/director John Stockwell ("Blue Crush") and writer Lizzy Weiss. "Rocky Point" is about a young woman living with friends on the North Shore who reluctantly takes in her estranged father. Stockwell and Weiss wrote the script and are executive producers. The Oahu-based Fox pilot once called "Big Island" is now called "O'ahu," with 12 days of filming Feb. 23 to March 9. A production office was set up at Turtle Bay Resort this week. The story centers on happenings at a high-end hotel. An open call for extras is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for bikini-model types ages 18 to 40 at Anna Fishburn's offices, 1121 Nuuanu Ave., Suite 200. Bring photos and a resumé. Look for changes in the script of NBC's "Pearl City" police drama to more accurately reflect Hawaii's diverse population and eliminate some stereotypes and possible offensive dialogue. A script revised from the original November version arrived yesterday. The hour-long buddy drama, which begins filming March 5, has two co-stars -- a newly arrived detective from Chicago (Sharif Atkins of "ER") and a veteran HPD detective (Ivan Sergei of "Crossing Jordan"). In the pilot, "Hawaiian Justice," locations may include Keehi Lagoon, Makapuu Pier, the Coast Guard station at Sand Island, the Queen's Medical Center, Chinatown, Kewalo Basin and Bishop Museum. Surfer and Maui resident Laird Hamilton, after producing "Riding Giants," this year's opening film at the Sundance Film Festival, and X-Dance winner "The Ride," has launched the film and TV production company BamMan Productions to focus on action sport production programming. Offices are in Maui and Malibu, Calif. Partners are fellow big-wave surfer Dave Kalama and Jane Kachmer. BamMan plans to develop a large-format big-wave film for IMAX and an action-sports reality program that Hamilton will co-host with his wife, volleyball player Gabrielle Reece.

Hamilton and Kachmer previously produced surf sequences for "Die Another Day" and Dana Brown's "Step Into Liquid"...
