Isle ‘Idol’ entries
a talented bunch

THIS MIGHT be the year a local resident goes all the way on Fox's "American Idol."

Sure, we didn't catch a glimpse of that Maryknoll student some folks thought would be the next Jordan Segundo during last Wednesday's audition episode, but the 808 state will still be represented well in Hollywood by the likes of Maui's Camile Velasco and Waianae's Clifford Iokia.

I was also impressed by Honolulu's Jonah Moananu, a k a MC Moxx -- wouldn't it be cool to see this guy follow in the footsteps of Ruben Studdard? And even though he didn't make it to the next round, I've got a feeling Kaneohe resident Matthew Motter will end up scoring more than a few dates after begging for a girlfriend on national television ...

SEEMS LIKE there's a storm brewing at one of Honolulu's oldest watering holes.

Some longtime customers at Anna Bannanas are up in arms over a recent remodeling of the Moiliili bar, and a few have even promised to boycott the place.

When I stopped by over the weekend, the first thing I noticed was that two of the booths that used to be by the front door were gone. Also gone are a couple of the steel-tipped dartboards, although most of the old license plates and posters remain plastered all over the ceiling and walls.

Granted, some things have changed, but is it enough to make people blacklist the establishment? I'm not so sure ...

LOCAL MATCHMAKING diva Dee Dee DeSoto checked in last week to give an update on her group dating service, Party of Six Hawaii. She says things are going well, with "lots of couples dating and one couple speaking of marriage!"

If you're single and looking for love (or maybe just a Valentine's Day date), check out the 40th floor of the Century Center tomorrow night, 8 to 10 p.m. DeSoto hosts an evening of five-minute speed dating, with pupus and wine tasting. Ten bucks gets you in; call 536-4229 ...

TOMORROW ALSO marks the start of Ryan's Grill's "6th Annual Carnival Celebration," continuing through Feb. 24. Every Wednesday night features live entertainment from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., with Kapena performing tomorrow and Feb. 18. The Opihi Pickers will play Feb. 11, and Ten Feet is scheduled to perform Feb. 24 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Call 591-9132 ...

FIRST IT was Dave Donnelly who left us, then travel exec Didi Ah Yo and radio personality Wili Moku. Someone tell the Big Guy upstairs that's enough for now ...
