No. 2 Punahou winsin double overtime

Freshman Spencer McLachlin shook off a bad cut to his face and made two big plays to lead No. 2 Punahou to a 52-50 overtime Interscholastic League of Honolulu victory over No. 4 Kamehameha last night at Kekuhaupio Gym.
With 20 seconds to go in OT, the 6-foot-5 forward hit a layup for the winning points.
Then, on Kamehameha's quick thrust down the court, McLachlin blocked Kawika Hepa's shot and was fouled soon thereafter. He went to the line with 4 seconds to go and missed the front end of a one-and-one.
The Warriors worked desperately for a shot, but the buzzer sounded before they could shoot.
"That was intense the whole time," said McLachlin, who got a hand to the face and came out in the fourth quarter while the team's trainer cleaned it up. "We tried our hardest, but struggled in the first half. We came out strong in the third quarter and were able to penetrate. It was awesome, the most fun game I've ever been in."
Punahou (9-1) forced the overtime by going on a 17-5 run that started in the third quarter and ended in the fourth. The surge turned a 38-29 deficit into a 44-43 lead with 2:35 left in regulation. McLachlin had five points in that span and Scott Otake added four.
The Warriors (5-5) regained the lead on Waika Spencer's strong post move and led by two, 46-44, before the Buffanblu's Kasey Ko sent the game into OT with two foul shots with 32 seconds left.
Ko was a force on defense for Punahou, holding the high-scoring Spencer to just four points from the second quarter through the extra period.
Led by Ikaika Hardie's 14 first-half points Kamehameha dominated the first 16 minutes and led by as many as 10 points, 22-12, at the end of one quarter. Hardie ended with a game-high 17 and a bundle of assists, but was held in check late in the game.
"I don't know how we fell behind by so much," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "But we weathered the storm and chipped away. I'm happy that our vision on the back line was so good, because usually we're a perimeter team."
Kamehameha was 2-for-7 from the line down the stretch in regulation, and Spencer missed a chance to win it when his two free throws with one second left bounced off the rim.
"We're very disappointed," Hardie said. "We didn't have the killer instinct tonight. Right now, we're playing for a good seeding in the league's third-place tournament."
