Kahuku lineman
commits to
Troy State
Yamauchi plans to sign with
the Sun Belt school in Alabama
Kahuku defensive end Shosei Yamauchi orally committed to accept a scholarship to play for Troy State University yesterday, according to his mom, Ana Jones.
Yamauchi was the sack-happy leader of the Red Raiders' defensive front during the team's run to the Division I state championship last fall.
Jones said her son was impressed with the Trojans' assistant who recruited him --defensive tackles coach Ricky Logo -- and the football philosophy that he discussed.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Yamauchi opted to make his decision without taking a recruiting trip because he's busy playing for the Kahuku basketball team this winter.
Troy State, a Division I Sun Belt Conference team from Troy, Ala., is known for playing national powers. The Trojans played -- and lost to -- Nebraska and Kansas State last season. They'll play national champion Louisiana State this fall.
Yamauchi was also recruited by Idaho State, Montana-Western and Boise State, among other schools.
"He's a good player and he's the kind of kid who would do fine wherever he goes," Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said. "He's a good, quiet kid, and when we needed big plays, he showed up."
