Cheers for the NFL

Hawaii youths are invited to participate in cheerleading sessions sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the National Football League, through Feb. 7.

Conducted by NFL cheerleaders Kristin Beisel, of the San Francisco 49ers, and Shantel Moncito, of the San Diego Chargers, the sessions are on:

>> Saturday -- Vidinha Stadium, Lihue, Kauai; 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

>> Tuesday -- Keaau High School Stadium, Hilo, Hawaii; 3- 5:30 p.m.

>> Wednesday -- Kealakehe Stadium, Kona, Hawaii; 3-5:30 p.m.

>> Thursday -- Keopulani Park, Wailuku, Maui; 3-5 p.m.

>> Feb. 7 -- Session 1, for middle school students, is at Waipio Soccer Stadium, 7:45-10:45 a.m.; Session 2, for high school students, takes place 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the stadium.

Participation is limited to 50 per clinic. Call 973-2272.

Ready for video date?

In need of a Valentine's Day date? If you're 18 or older and don't mind TV exposure, a new local reality show, "Hawaii's Dream Date," begins airing Feb. 8 and 9 on KFVE, and executive producer Seth Feldman is looking for date-worthy souls.

Hook up at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Volcano Joe's, 1810 University Ave., to get on your way to finding Mr. or Ms. Right.

The two singles chosen will visit a day spa, go on a shopping spree, enjoy dinner and a night at a Waikiki hotel -- all captured on video, of course.

Casting for Players

Actors are needed for paid positions with Murder Mystery Players. Actors will be cast for the next public Murder Mystery show, "Can You Say Murder?" which will play every other Saturday at Dave & Buster's March 6 through May 15.

Four men and two women are needed immediately for the production. Actors will also be considered for private shows booked throughout the year.

Auditions take place at Dave & Buster's, 1030 Auahi St., starting at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 10. All actors must be 18 or older and possess strong improvisational skills.

Actors from previous Murder Mysteries are encouraged to audition. Those interested should come prepared with a memorized joke and will be asked to do cold readings from a script.

Lei queen sought

The City & County of Honolulu will hold its annual Lei Queen Selection Contest on March 6 at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park.

To compete for this honor, women ages of 31 to 54 (na wahine makua) are required to make and discuss the materials used in creating their lei, make a brief speech and perform a hula.

To enter, contestants must attend an orientation meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at McCoy Pavilion. A completed application is due at this meeting, if it has not already been submitted by mail or in person to the Lei Queen Selection Contest Chair, Naomi Carter.

Applications are available in all satellite city halls and district parks, and should be sent to Carter at the Department of Parks & Recreation, City & County of Honolulu, Recreation Support Services, 1000 Uluohia St., Suite 309, Kapolei, HI 96707.

The winner will be crowned on May 1. She will preside over the Lei Day Festival at Queen Kapiolani Park.

An 'Ugly Duckling' comes to La Pietra

Honk!," the award-winning musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's classic tale, "The Ugly Duckling," opened in London's West End in 1997 to rave reviews.

If you missed Manoa Valley Theatre's production of the musical last year, you can catch the tale of Ugly who is lost and pursued by the hungry Cat as she tries to find her way back to the farm, as presented by students of La Pietra -- Hawaii School for Girls, at 7 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The production's humor, charm and message of tolerance is perfect for audiences of all ages.

Drama teacher Reiko Ho is directing, assisted by La Pietra '99 grad Sallie Carey who is stage manager and technical director, and singer-actress Shari Lynn, La Pietra's music teacher. Parts for three male characters will be played by students from St. Louis and Kaiser high schools.

Admission is $5. The school is at 2933 Poni Moi Road. For more information, call the school at 922-2744.
