Underground hip-hop
thrives on Thursdays
Thursday nights at the Velvet Lounge have built up into one of your best chances to catch the top talent in Honolulu's underground hip-hop scene.
"Connect Four," hosted by Ion Myke and Sean D, features an open mic downstairs for any MC who wants to spit some game, while upstairs serves as the "B-Boy Park." I've even heard the Velvet Lounge's walls will be whitewashed this week to allow graffiti artists to get-down-with-the-get-down tonight at the club.
This week's special guests include DJ Risup, 12" Species, Microscopic Syllables and members of the Hawaii Slam Team. Doors open at 10 p.m. for this 18-and-over party, and five bucks gets you through the door. Call 528-4911 ...
OVER AT THE Beach House tomorrow night, the guys from Ko'u Mana'o celebrate the release of their new album, "My Hawaiian Girl," with a party that gets started at 6 p.m.
Joining them on stage during the evening are Ikepono, The Ionz, Koa'uka, Inoa'ole, B.E.T. and Kapena. Tahitian halau Heretamanui will also be on hand to perform. Once again, five bucks will get you into the party, but you've got to be 21 or older to check it out. Call 566-0644 ...
AND IT'S THE last weekend of the month, which means the insanely popular "Piranha Room" returns to the Ocean Club on Saturday.
This month, Russell Tanoue brings DJs Frankie and Jose2Hype to town from their regular gig at Tabu in Las Vegas' MGM Grand Hotel. Long lines are guaranteed the later it gets in the evening, so get there early! Cover is $10 after 9 p.m. Call 531-8444 ...
ALSO ON SATURDAY, the "Glitter & Glamour Experience" returns after a brief hiatus during the holidays. Instead of taking place at the Wave Waikiki, as it normally does, this month's G&G moves to the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, where it'll be incorporated into the usual "Feng Shui" party that goes off poolside at the hotel.
Theme for the night is "The Heavy Petting Zoo," and you're supposed to wear animal prints and/or leather. DJs Daniel J, IKON, Scottie Soul, Delve and XL will spin in two rooms, and Los Angeles' DJ REZA is making the trip to throw down as well. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. for the 21-and-over crowd; call 941-0424, Ext. 12 ...
SEEMS LIKE YOU'VE got another chance to catch Go Jimmy Go before they go on tour -- check them out Saturday night at Anna Bannana's starting at 9:30 p.m. Cover is six bucks for this one, and you've got to be 21 or older to get in. Call 946-5190 ...
