Another man is arrested
for the incident in Kapolei
Police arrested a 21-year-old man and were searching for another suspect for allegedly firing a sawed-off shotgun in a Kapolei bar at an off-duty police officer.
The incident occurred at the T-Spot Hideaway Cigar and Lounge in the Kapolei Marketplace on Farrington Highway about 11:30 p.m. Police say the 21-year-old man started a fight with a 48-year-old officer and another 38-year-old man.
Police said the suspect started the fight because he thought the officer was a different man, whom the suspect had fought with in the bar earlier that night before being asked to leave.
Police said the second suspect, a man in his late 30s, went outside and got the shotgun from his vehicle's back seat, returned to the lounge and handed the weapon to the 21-year-old, who allegedly fired about three shots at the officer.
No one was injured by the gunfire, but both the officer and the other victim suffered minor injuries during the fight.
The 21-year-old was arrested for second-degree attempted murder shortly after the shooting, and the shotgun was recovered on Kamokila Street and Farrington Highway.
Police said charges against the 21-year-old are expected to come today.
The bar's management declined to comment on the incident. By yesterday afternoon, many at nearby businesses in the shopping center were only beginning to hear about what had happened overnight.
"We never expected that," said Sheldon Yoneda, a sales associate at the Armac Printing and Copy Center, which is next door to the lounge. "We know the owners. They always come to talk to us. It really is surprising."
Yoneda said the bar has always seemed harmless, drawing big crowds for sports games and karaoke night.
But Anthony Kim, owner of nearby Hana Sushi, said he's seen rowdy crowds from the lounge in the parking lot before.
"A bar is a bar," he said.
