Retired general takes post
in Iraq provisional authority
The Washington Times reports that retired Lt. Gen. Claude M. Kicklighter, who commanded U.S. Army Pacific at Fort Shafter from 1989 to 1991, has left his post at the Department of Veterans Affairs to join the Washington staff of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq.
The newspaper said the Coalition Provisional Authority Rear is aiding in the award of reconstruction contracts and in moving Iraq to self-rule by July 1. It periodically sends teams to Iraq for a firsthand assessment, then returns to report to senior Pentagon officials. There are plans to appoint a four-star officer to run military operations during the transition.
Kicklighter also commanded the 25th Infantry Division from 1984 to 1986.
The Naval Facilities Engineering Command has chosen Kalani M. Fukuda from its Pacific Division at Pearl Harbor as the civilian engineer of the year. Fukuda developed several high-visibility Diego Garcia projects in support of Afghanistan war efforts, including a communications facility, tent camp drainage system and other improvements totaling $7.1 million. He helped in determining the more than $220 million in facility damage incurred by Super Typhoon Pongsona, and developed a budget package for the U.S. Pacific Fleet commander that resulted in more than $32 million of supplemental funding allowing rapid repair of damaged facilities.
Retired Navy Capt. Bob Brandhuber, former chief of staff for the Pacific Fleet Submarine Forces at Pearl Harbor, is helping to establish Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Command at Point Loma in San Diego. The Navy organization will develop training strategies and tactics for hunting submarines, especially the growing threat of diesel subs. The San Diego command will be headed by a rear admiral with a staff of 90.
