1970: Everything
Spiro Agnew says
is Greek to me

Dave Donnelly / 1938-2004
Columnist dies at 66

NICK'S Fishmarket was celebrity row over the weekend. Jeff Harman was hosting a dinner party for Spiro Agnew and wife, along with the Arnold Palmers, while dining in another part of the restaurant were Liz & Dick, who had sneaked in from Kauai. Nick Nickolas was having a ball chatting in Greek with Agnew, but everything Spiro says sounds like Greek to us. The veep claims that a half-hour golf lesson from Palmer has taken six strokes off his game. (Jan. 20, 1970) ...

IN from Las Vegas to catch the Kay Starr opening at the Monarch Room was Dan Sawyer. He's the Royal's mainland contact and the guy who has signed future performers for the room. The current show is pretty heavy talent on country music -- with both the Expedition and Miss Starr participating. The result might best be dramatized by the remark of one elegantly clad dinner guest: "In the Monarch Room?" Don't be surprised if the hotel returns to a Hawaiian revue after the "names" already signed fulfill their contract. (Jan. 18, 1971) ...

THE Big Isle's magnet for celebrities, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, always seems to have a well-known name or two in residence. Currently there are the Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr.s, and booked for the next week are comedians Bob Newhart and Don Rickles with their spouses. And ex-NFL great Don Hutson, whom many consider to be the finest pass catcher of all time, checks into the luxury spa Feb. 2. (Jan. 19, 1972) ...

THE Bespoke Overcoat: Walt Lindley, adman at Fawcett-McDermott, has a beautiful wool overcoat that is thought of around the ad agency as the "office overcoat." It is much traveled, though more often than not on the backs of others than Lindley. The coat just came back from a skiing trip to Switzerland where it helped shield John McDermott from the cold. It returned just in time for a cleaning, and then Ray Milici -- of Fawcett-McDermott's rival agency -- borrowed it to wear to President Nixon's inauguration. Lindley is now wondering if this marks the beginning of a gigantic interagency borrowing campaign. (Jan. 18, 1973) ...

I CHATTED with retired Maj. Gen. Harry Brooks yesterday -- we were both judges in the Carol Kai bed race and parade -- and he was luxuriating in the weather. "Last week, I was in Indianapolis," said Brooks, now an exec with Amfac, "and it was 41 degrees below, counting the chill factor." What was the hardest part of reverting to civilian life after 29 years in the Army? "Learning to drive," quipped Brooks. For the past several years, he had a chauffeur drive him virtually everywhere. (Jan. 24, 1977) ...

FORMER Isle columnist Tom Horton, who doesn't hide his love of food and fine wines under a bushel, has an article in the current Mainliner magazine. Called "A Cuisine for Sybarites," it deals with the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and particularly chef Kim Dietrich. (Jan. 21, 1982) ...

PRO Bowler Jack Lambert is getting a long jump on his fellow NFL all-stars -- he's already in town to play, although the Pro Bowl is a long way off. The other night, he demonstrated his singing talent at Bill Walton's Rodeo Club on Lewers, and, would you believe, not a single member of the audience bellyached about his performance. (Jan. 19, 1982) ...

UH professors Ted Becker and Jim Dator each have articles printed in the December issue of the Futurist magazine. (Jan. 19, 1982) ...

HERE'S a quote from the Regent magazine, published by Regent Hotels International: "Because I have spent a lot of time in hotels and motel rooms around the world, I have had plenty of opportunity to take a look at TV, not only at what is being produced nationally, but locally. Each commercial seems to me to be more vulgar and asinine than the other. TV is running an endless succession of crummy, cruddy commercials made by local people who don't know what they are doing." The person quoted wasn't just another disgruntled viewer, but David Ogilvy, of the Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency. (Jan. 21, 1986) ...
