Superintendent gets OK to speak at session
Pointing out that a Miss Universe, the Dalai Lama and Tom Selleck have addressed joint sessions of the state House and Senate, Rep. K. Mark Takai (D, Newtown-Pearl City) said there is nothing wrong with lawmakers meeting in a joint session next week for an address by Schools Superintendent Pat Hamamoto.
In fact, he said, it should be done every year.
Hamamoto is scheduled to deliver her address at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Senate chamber.
House Republicans objected to having a joint session for an appointed head of a state department. House Minority Leader Galen Fox (R, Waikiki-Ala Moana) said it would be more appropriate for the chairman of the state Board of Education to address a joint session.
After a 30-minute debate, the House approved a resolution for the joint session, with votes following party lines. All 36 Democrats voted in favor of the resolution. And except for Rep. Corrine Ching (R, Nuuanu-Liliha) and Rep. Bud Stonebraker (R, Kalama Valley-Hawaii Kai), House Republicans voted against.
Senators approved the resolution Wednesday.
