Heineken holding
free concert tonight

IT'S NO secret that Heineken is one of the most popular beers in Hawaii, but I was blown away by just how much of the brew was sold to local residents in 2003.

During the months of January through November alone, Heineken sold 1 million cases -- that's 24 million green bottles -- to thirsty beer drinkers throughout the state. In celebration of that milestone, there will be a free concert tonight at the Beach House with B.E.T., Ho'onu'a, Inoa'ole and Koa'uka.

Doors open at 7 p.m. tonight for the "Thanks a Million" party, but while it's free to get into this 21-and-over event, you unfortunately still have to pay for drinks. Call 296-9850 ...

ISLAND MUSIC FANS with a little more cash to spend might want to check out the Waikiki Shell on Saturday. The "Budweiser True Music Winter Bash 2004" gets started at 4 p.m. with entertainment by the Pipeline Band, One Drop, Ko'u Mana'o, Hi-Risk, Next Generation, the Opihi Pickers, Ten Feet, Aloha and Pati. Ho'onu'a and Koa'uka will be there as well.

Tickets for this year's "Winter Bash" are $15 each for lawn seating, with reserved seats ranging in price from $17.50 to $25. Want to get the most entertainment bang for your buck? Pick up a copy of the local music video compilation DVD, "Overdrive Live," at any Tower Records or Borders location, and you'll find a complimentary ticket to Saturday's concert tucked inside. AND OVER AT Indigo tomorrow night, there's a new party getting started that aims to "create a weekly (event) where artists, musicians, and connoisseurs will feel at home."

The first installment of "Get Fresh!" kicks off at 10 p.m. with San Francisco-based breaks DJ Lorin Ashton (aka Bassnectar) headlining the evening. He's passing through Hawaii while on his way home from Australia.

Opening for Ashton will be DJs Mark and Sovergn-T, the Sisters in Sound's DJ Toki and the Nocturnal Sound Krew's DJs Compose and Eskae. Eli from Quadraphonix will also be there to do some live percussion, and Cinema Paradise is hooking up Indigo with art projections to get folks visually stimulated.

"Get Fresh!" promoters Bryan Lew, Cameron Krewson and Mark Chittom hope to keep this party exciting with a variety of live entertainment and DJs spinning vinyl. In the next few weeks you can expect house music from San Francisco's DJ Ira, a fashion show with local designers Fighting Eel and Brazilian samba drumming with Sambanda ...
