Perbera commits to Montana Western

St. Louis quarterback Keali'i Perbera, who guided the Crusaders to a runner-up finish in the state tournament this past season, has verbally committed to Montana Western.

"It was the best offer I received," said Perbera, who also admitted that one of the deciding factors was all of the local players currently playing at Montana Western.

Sea Warriors stop Vulcans

Audrius Peciukas made three big 3-pointers in the second half to lead Hawaii Pacific over Hawaii-Hilo 84-77 in Hilo last night.

Marvin Noble led the Sea Warriors (6-10, 3-2 Pacific West Conference) with 24 points and Aaron Abrams added 22.

The Vulcans (11-3, 3-1) were led by Justin Griffin and Ryan Hogue, who each scored 14, but were without leading scorer Ryan Abrahams. HPU hosts Brigham Young-Hawaii on Thursday and the Vulcans go on the road to play Montana State-Billings next week.

Vulcan baseball team loses to Kansas

The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team suffered its second loss of the season at the hands of Kansas 14-2 yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Andy Scholl's RBI single opened the game for Kansas in the first inning as the Jayhawks amassed 19 hits in routing the Vulcans.

The lone bright spot for UH-Hilo came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Johnny Dudoit smacked a two-run home run for the Vulcans' only score of the game.

Spectator tickets for the Jan. 30-31 Wendy's Champions Skins Game on Maui are on sale for $20 per day.

The $600,000 event features Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and defending champion Lee Trevino playing on the Wailea Gold Course. The nine-hole pro-am starts at 9 a.m. both days, followed by the nine-hole skins game at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Wailea Golf Club pro shops, Queen Kaahumanu Center, Kaanapali Golf Club, Nevada Bob's Golf in Kihei, Maui Golf Shop and most Wailea hotels.

Bike ride, walk to benefit Epilepsy Foundation

The Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii will host the second Sharon's Ride/Walk for Epilepsy on Feb. 1.

Both events start at Kapiolani Community College with the 25-mile bike ride beginning at 7 a.m. and the 1-mile walk at 8 a.m. A fun fair with food booths is also part of the fund-raiser.

The ride/walk is named for the late Sharon Rosenfeld, a nurse who worked with epilepsy patients and was killed during a cross-country bicycle ride in 1993. The Honolulu event is one of seven held nationally.
