‘i scream’ about
Hawaiian women

The locally-made short, "i scream, floats & Sundays," will be part of the PBS series "Colorvision," airing 11 p.m. Sunday on PBS Hawaii. The winner of the 2002 Hawaii International Film Festival's Video/Filmmaker Award, the short will be shown in the program's third episode entitled "Identity." Previous episodes were "Heroes" and "Dreams," with "Love," "Rage" and "Death" to be addressed in the weeks to come.

"i scream ... " is described as a visual meditation on the tensions confronting Hawaiian women today, as they traverse different landscapes, cultures and generations. Comprised of three short pieces, the 9-minute experimental film captures the personal experiences of its creators, writer-director Leah Kihara, associate producer Nalani Blane and producer Leanne Kang Ferrer.

Coincidentally, all three women attended Kamehameha Schools, but didn't meet up until they were working in the industry. Kihara said that "collectively, we had a huge base of friends and family to tap into for cast, crew and inspiration. We were fortunate to have actress and fellow filmmaker Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey Buyers involved as a narrator. I was also very honored to work with my own mom as talent!"

Leah Kihara, Nalani Blane and Leanne Kang Ferrer created the short "i scream, floats & Sundays" that will air as part of the PBS "Colorvision" series airing at 11 p.m. Sunday.

The short was funded by a grant from Pacific Islanders in Communications.

"Our main intention of getting our film on 'Colorvision' was to have Polynesians represented as a viable minority in America," said Ferrer. "We are excited that a national television audience will see Hawaiian women portrayed beyond the typical stereotypes."

As a multicultural showcase of media, dialogue and music, "Colorvision" creates a cross-cultural community, while providing a new vision of a diverse world. It's hosted by former MTV veejay and celebrity Daisy Fuentes.
