10 years of
improv fun

Loose Screws, Honolulu's longest-running improvisational theater company, celebrates its 10th anniversary with "Loose Screws X: Ten Pin."

This all-improvised show will be performed at 8 p.m. today and tomorrow at the ARTS at Marks Garage.

"Loose Screws X: Ten Pin" will feature many of the short, improvised games and scenes that have helped to make Loose Screws so long-lived, as well as a few surprises.

Formed in the summer of 1993, some of Loose Screws' notable shows from the past decade include the "last theater show of the 20th century" on New Year's Eve 1999 and 2000, an improvised two-act kabuki play and their hugely popular Valentine's Day shows at Kumu Kahua.

Traditionally the anniversary shows have been themed around the correct wedding anniversary gift. But because the 10th-anniversary gift is tin (which they feel is a stupid gift), they decided to build the show around bowling. Audience members who wear bowling attire or bring in bowling-related items (which may be used in the show) will receive a dollar off the ticket price.

Current members of Loose Screws include Mike Bailie, Robb Bonnell, Ray Bumatai, Stephanie Curtis-Conching, Meredith Desha, Chris Doi, R. Kevin Doyle, Sean T.C. O'Malley, Garrick Paikai and Tony Pisculli. Many of the group's alumni will return for the show, including Dan Kois, who plans to perform via speakerphone.

Members of the group have gone on to work with Chicago's Second City and Improv-Olympics, New York's Upright Citizen's Brigade, various branches of ComedySportz, Hawaii's Mental Tilapia and other improv groups across the country. For a complete list of Loose Screws alumni, check the group's Web site at www.loose-screws.org.

Tickets for "Loose Screws X: Ten Pin" are $11 and will be available at the door 45 minutes before show time.

The ARTS at Marks Garage is at 1159 Nuuanu Ave., a block mauka of the Hawaii Theatre. No reservations are required. For more information, call 523-1004.
