Event looks at restoring
Alzheimer’s patients’
home comfort

Security is the No. 1 concern for people who suffer from Alzheimer's and their caregivers, according to Hale Takazawa, architect and part owner of Pacific Atelier International Inc.

Workshop

What: Retrofitting the home for those suffering from Alzheimer's
When: 10 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow
Where: 42 Puiwa Road (at the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council President's Room)
Cost: Free, donations welcome
Call: 591-2771 for more information

The problem has been made clear in recent years as more elderly people have been reported missing after wandering away from their homes.

"I don't want to say you have to lock them in," Takazawa said. "The ideal scenario is safe access to open space," which would build self-esteem, allow respect for their humanity and give caregivers less stress and more peace of mind.

"Don't limit them; try to give them space and secure it since they tend to wander."

Takazawa will conduct a workshop tomorrow morning on how to maintain or restore a safe and healthy environment for those suffering from Alzheimer's, a degenerative brain disease that, according to the Alzheimer's Association, affects about 4.5 million Americans.

Many of the things he recommends will be helpful for elderly home care and those with disabilities as well, such as lowering countertops for easy access and installing hand rails and door rails. "This lets them circulate the room freely."

He also suggests creating a cheerful environment. "Colors make it fun and stimulating, and they respond to it well."

The workshop will be held at the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council President's Room at 42 Puiwa Road. Call 591-2771 for more information.
