Bad weather showed
good side of drivers

WEDNESDAY'S weather was about the worst I've seen since I arrived in Hawaii. It made me feel not so bad about being house bound with a broken hip. Over at KSSK they referred to the storm as "The Day the World Blew Upside Down." The station's on-air personalities were reporting on various closures, roofs blowing away and traffic accidents throughout the day, when a member of the station's loyal cellular posse called in. Seems he was driving past the State Capitol at about 5 p.m. when he saw a guy fishing in the Capitol ponds. Drive-time host Curt Williams quipped, "Gee, I didn't know it was open fishing season at the Capitol." ...

BANKOH'S Sherri Bulkley had a nicer experience when, driving home with no traffic lights working, she came to the intersection of Kalanianiole Highway and Hawaii Kai Drive. There were no police on the scene yet but Sherri reports, nobody seemed to notice. Cars proceeded as if the lights were working, with 20 or 30 cars going in one direction and then 20 or 30 in the other. What amazed her was that the left-turning cars used their proper times and everyone went about their business, Hawaii style ...

How about a cookie?

IT'S Girl Scout Cookie time again. So many cookies are being ordered that the cookies will have to be distributed at Aloha Stadium. CEO Gail Mukaihata Hannemann is repeating last year's successful "Operation Girl Scout Cookies." Sales begin Sunday ... Jimmy Kuroiwa of Local 368 asked his son Jason for a photo to make him a kind of "Poster Boy" for the cookie. Jason misunderstood and instead of a photo, he placed an order for cookies. Jimmy immediately e-mailed back saying what he really wanted was a picture of him to represent our troops serving away from home. Jason replied he'd get his whole troop in a photo and it's on the way ...

THE Aveda Salon & Spa at Ala Moana Center is the setting of TLC's "A Makeover Story" airing at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 16. Two female friends stationed at Schofield Barracks got the makeovers ... Also, Aveda's Valentine's Day campaign is titled, "Get in bed with Aveda." I don't think it's that kind of place ...

Some sales pitch

THESALES director for Clear Channel Hawaii, Scott Hogle, was surprised to hear that wife Kate was in labor because she was just eight-and-a-half months pregnant. What caused the early labor? Scott learned that Kate, who works at an advertising agency, was listening to a KHVH sales pitch from Brian Loughran and soon thereafter Casey arrived. Scott followed up with Brian, saying, "That must have been some sales pitch." ...

LOOSE Screws, the improv group, will celebrate its 10th year anniversary tonight and tomorrow at The ARTS at Mark's Garage. Their production is called "Loose Screws X: Ten Pin." Shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $11. Tonight will be the final appearance of "Loose Screws" regular Stephanie Conching ...

IN celebration of the open of its new neighbor Jackie's Kitchen, the Rainbow Collection has introduced a new jewelry called "Chopstix," created by store designer Karla Brom. Partial proceeds will go to the Jackie Chan Foundation, which supports several charities ...
