Azenha to miss MPSF opener for Warriors

Sophomore opposite Pedro Azenha won't travel with the Hawaii men's volleyball team today as the Warriors head to Santa Barbara for their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opening series.

Hawaii is scheduled to meet the Gauchos Thursday and Friday in the conference opener for both teams. Hawaii is 1-1 (the win over Manitoba counts as an exhibition); UCSB is 3-1.

Azenha was initially diagnosed with a second-degree sprain of his left ankle, but further tests will be conducted to determine whether the injury is more severe. He was hurt at the end of Game 3 of Saturday's match in the Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational against Lewis.

Azenha and Lewis hitter Jeff Soler got their feet tangled on the final play of Game 3. The Warriors went on to win the match in five, earning their first OHVI title since 1999.

Azenha was named the tournament's MVP, putting down a career-high 33 kills in the victory over the Flyers.

UCSB finished fifth at its own Elephant Bar Invitational last week. The Gauchos defeated Quincy in their season opener last Tuesday, but went 2-1 in the tournament, losing to Cal State Northridge but defeating UC Irvine and Stanford.

Chrisman, Abrahams share PacWest honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii center Jake Chrisman and UH-Hilo forward Ryan Abrahams were named co-Pacific West Conference Players of the Week for leading their teams through the first week of conference play unbeaten.

Chrisman, who won the award for the third time this year, averaged 23 points and six rebounds over three games and defeated Montana State-Billings on a buzzer beater.

Abrahams exploded for 27 points against Chaminade Saturday after being held to 11 by the Silverswords Thursday.

The Seasiders (3-0) lead the Vulcans (2-0) by a half game in the conference.
