Isle gas prices steady
After four weeks of stability or decline, retail gasoline prices surged more than 7 cents per gallon in the past three weeks, an industry analyst said yesterday.
The price for all three grades combined was $1.58 on Friday, up 7.1 cents since Dec. 19, according to the Lundberg Survey of 8,000 stations nationwide.
While another survey showed gas prices in Hawaii were virtually unchanged in the last month, they are still significantly higher than anywhere in the country.
AAA reported a state average of $2.09 a gallon for regular. Wailuku posted the highest per-gallon cost of $2.37 for regular.
Alaska has the next highest-priced gas in the country, according to AAA, with a gallon of regular averaging $1.79.
Several factors were responsible for the increase in prices, including rising crude oil prices, a weaker U.S. dollar, colder weather that drove up demand for home heating oil and two U.S. gasoline reformulations, said analyst Trilby Lundberg.
