Kalaheo beats Moanalua
Kalaheo dispatched one of the main threats to its Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball championship last night by outmuscling Moanalua 59-41 in front of about 400 at the Kalaheo gym.
Sam Wilhoite, the 6-foot-7 center, scored 13 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, but four other Mustangs scored in a crucial 13-2 second-quarter run as they turned a 16-12 game into a commanding 29-14 lead.
Wilhoite did most of his scoring in the third quarter when he pounded home 13 points.
"We were able to get the other guys involved in the second quarter, and that caused them to abandon the zone and it opened it up for Sam in the third," said Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado, whose team improved to 3-0 in the OIA and dropped Moanalua to 2-1. "That's when we knew we could establish Sam."
It was the third win of the year for the Mustangs over the Menehunes. The other two contests were in the preseason.
Moanalua kept it close in the first quarter, mainly on the work of posts Marquise Duvall and Eric Keys. Duvall scored six of his team-high 16 points in the period.
"Our plan was to go to the guy who Sam wasn't covering, and that was Marquise," Moanalua coach Byron Cheng said. "We tried to play a real disciplined game and I think we did that, but we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and that's a credit to Kalaheo's defense.
"I don't think this game is a mark of the way our season is going to go. We have a big game against Kahuku next week and I like our chances. I think our boys will be prepared."
William Elliott had four points and several key steals in Kalaheo's big second-quarter surge. Wilhoite capped the run with his second 3-pointer and Kalaheo eventually took a 31-17 halftime lead by holding the Menehunes to five third-quarter points.
Wilhoite's third-period spree was helped along by teammates David Moore and Neil Bowers, who continued to feed him inside.
"Our guards had awesome input to me inside," Wilhoite said. "This was a big win for us, because it was at home, where we haven't had a game for a month. We were fired up because of the home crowd and we needed to beat them a third time to keep our spirits up and going."
Zach Pendergast scored five fourth-quarter points and Kamoe Mehrtens added four for the Menehunes, who trailed 46-27 after three quarters and tried to dent Kalaheo's lead as much as possible.
"It's difficult to beat the same team three times," Furtado said. "We played well and the boys came out and established themselves. The energy was good and the intensity was good."

Gritty defense and a late steal helped the Chargers improve to 2-1 in OIA play with a victory over Aiea.
Branson Rambonga led the Chargers with 11 points in the win, but Na Ali'i had their chances. After forcing a turnover, Aiea had the ball with four seconds left, but the Chargers were able to steal the inbounds pass to preserve the win.
Free-throw shooting was also critical for Aiea, which converted just seven of 19 chances from the charity line.
