1977: Sonya Mendez
gets a cool farewell
at Big Isle gig
SINGER Sonya Mendez made a big splash her final night at the Keauhou Beach Hotel -- the employers pushed her into the swimming pool complete with gown, shoes, pantyhose, eyelashes and maile lei. Her two week engagement at the Big Isle hotel was extended to four weeks so her pipes must not have been too rusty prior to the friendly dunking. (Jan. 18, 1977 ) ...
GRAPHIC designer Clarence Lee had a tougher time than most in deciding on gift boxes during the past holiday. He pondered over the old classic Hawaiian Plantation line, Morrow's Hawaiian gift boxes for nuts and candies, Duty Free Shoppers' Hawaiian Seashell Belgium Chocolates and Mauna Loa's Honey Macs. The decision was particularly difficult since wife Elsa Carl Lee designed them all. A collection of each was the only way out. (Jan. 10, 1986) ...
AUTHOR Lynn Nakkim moved slowly around the decks of the SS Independence last week when she was lecturing about Hana, Maui, but not because she was seasick. She was wearing a leg cast courtesy of her new horse, Kalikinaha, who bucked her off. Nakkim landed on her feet, but that's not always an advantage -- she broke her heel in two places. AMONG the items which will be part of the Heart Ball's silent auction Feb. 22 will be two tickets to Paris on Pan Am, a week in a Sun Valley deluxe condo, a stay in Chris Hemmeter's private suite at the Hyatt Maui and 18K gold earrings donated by Patsy Hemmeter. Headliner for the Heart Ball is Rosemary Clooney, with Kay Starr acting as mistress of ceremonies and her ex-husband, Del Courtney, and his orchestra playing for dancing. (Jan. 15, 1986) ...
WINTERS of Content: It was a champagne New Year's celebration for George and Madeline Winters -- well, sort of. The two bought a champagne-colored Mercedes 380SL from TheoDavies Euromotors' Stephen Hong, the 11th Benz to enter the Winter's wonderland. (Jan. 16, 1986) ...
BEARS rooting against the Bears? If you're talking about the Wall Street Bears they are -- those people betting the stock market will be have to be hoping for a New England upset over the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl. In the past 19 Super Bowls, the stock market has gone up 17 times when the NFC (the Bears' in this case) win. In 1986 the Wall Street Bears will be cheering on the Bears, Chicago variety. (Jan. 17, 1986) ...
DENVER Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who also owns Nick's Fishmarket in Waikiki, was shown on the sidelines yesterday, protecting himself from the nasty Cleveland weather with a fur coat that would make Carol & Mary jealous. He'll have to sell a few lobsters to pay for that. (Jan. 12, 1987) ...
THE 19 Hawaii hotels awarded the AAA's Four Diamond Award this year were hosted to a celebratory luncheon by Adi Kohler at his, ahem, Five Diamond Mauna Kea Beach Resort. (Jan. 13, 1987) ...
THE combatants in 1987's big middleweight boxing matchup April 6, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard, are already in training. Hagler has arrived at his Palm Springs training camp and Leonard has chosen Hilton Head, S.C., as a site to get ready. Promoter Tom Moffatt is already rubbing his hands in anticipation of the crowds who'll be battling to get tickets to the closed-circuit showing he'll be promoting locally. (Jan. 15, 1987) ...
MEDIA Five architect Desmond Brooks and his wife, Pauline, are up from Down Under where they now live, apparently unruffled about missing the America's Cup sailing competition going on in Perth. (Jan. 16, 1987) ...
A COUPLE of interesting reprises coming up: KHPR will sponsor a showing of the film "Amadeus" on Jan. 30, Mozart's birthday, at the Kapiolani Theater. And, of course, the composer's No. 1 champion in Hawaii, Joe Moore, will be on hand to lead a discussion on the real and reel Mozart following the film. (Jan. 14, 1988) ...
