Iolani routs
another ILH foe

Kamehameha was sharp early against Iolani last night, but not good enough at the end.

The two-time defending state champion Raiders led by just four -- 24-20 -- late in the first half, but roared to a 60-38 Interscholastic League of Honolulu victory by dominating the second half in front of about 900 at Kekuhaupio Gym.

"Early on, we played tough, but you've got to play four quarters to stay with a team like Iolani," first-year Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We didn't follow through with our game plan. It was much like one of our preseason games against them. We turned the ball over too much."

The Warriors kept the Raiders from running their patented offense in the first quarter and much of the second, and held Iolani star point guard Derrick Low to just four points all night.

In the early going, Kamehameha also worked it inside, successfully, drove to the hoop with gusto and hustled after loose balls. But despite Waika Spencer's eight first-quarter points, the Warriors trailed 19-14 after the first eight minutes.

Ryan Hirata's three 3-point bombs in the first quarter carried the Raiders, while Todd Blankenship's six second-quarter points allowed Iolani to gain a 26-20 edge.

After taking a breather for nearly half of the second quarter, Low began to get more involved in directing the offense.

The Raiders kept chipping away from there, and when they came out in the second half, their fired-up defense took over.

"Our trap wasn't working early in the game," said Blankenship, who finished with 14 points. "But from the second quarter on, we began to be smarter with the trap and didn't use it every single chance we had. We were much more selective with it and it worked."

Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi also credited the defense, which held Kamehameha to nine third-quarter points.

"We knew our offense wasn't working, but we looked at the scoreboard and saw that we only gave up 20 points in the first half. We knew that we could win if we could keep playing strong defense. And our offense eventually started to play well."

Patience on offense and hustle on defense was the key for the Raiders in the second half, with veterans Kyle Pape, Sean Carney and Jon Yasuda leading the way.

Iolani built a 46-29 lead at the end of three quarters, and Pape and Hirata hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter for an insurmountable 52-29 bulge.

Throughout the second half, Kamehameha wasn't able to get the ball to Spencer, its most potent inside threat.

"It goes hand in hand with the turnovers," Nakanishi said. "You can't get him the ball if you're giving it up so much."
