UH swim teams have mixed results

The Rainbow Wahine swim team stands at 13-3 after taking two of three dual meets at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex last night, while UH's men's team split its two dual meets and is now 11-4.

The women defeated Stony Brook 127-16 and San Diego State 97-43 but lost to Wisconsin 90-50. The men beat Stony Brook 117-23 and lost to Wisconsin 91-49.

Pro Bowl Festival replaces NFL Experience

The NFL is replacing its Topps NFL Experience with a free Pro Bowl Football Festival.

The two-day festival at Kapiolani Park starts Feb. 6 at noon and runs through Feb. 7. The event features nonstop entertainment by some of Hawaii's hottest bands, free autographs from NFL players and Pro Bowl cheerleaders, NFL mascots, and interactive football games.

Other events in the festival include the Military Challenge (Feb. 6), Special Olympics Auction, NFL football and cheerleading clinics and a music and dance competition sponsored by Sassy Magazine.

USTA returns to the Big Island

The Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger returns to Hawaii for a fifth time this month. The event, running Jan. 24 to Feb. 1, features a men's and women's draw and $50,000 in prize money. It is the only ATP event played in Hawaii.

The competition includes tennis players ranked or previously ranked in the top 100 of the ATP. Brian Vahaly, Dmitry Tursunov, Paul Goldstein, Robert Kendrick, Prakrash Amritraj and Alex Kim are expected to compete. In the women's draw, Tara Snyder, Ansley Cargill, Lindsey Lee-Waters, Marissa Irvin, Sarah Taylor and Angela Haynes.

The qualifying draw is Jan. 24-25, with the main draw set to begin on Jan. 26.

De La Salle coach recovering at home

De La Salle High School football coach Bob Ladouceur suffered a mild heart attack on Dec. 31 and is recovering at his home, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ladouceur, 49, is the man behind the nation's longest winning streak -- 151 games. He also holds a 287-14-1 career record with the Spartans, who finished last season as the nation's top team.

De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) came to Hawaii two seasons ago and beat Saint Louis 31-21 as part of a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium that also featured Long Beach Poly's 42-16 victory over Kahuku.

Golfers Kelly and Wilson to give clinic

Hawaii's junior golfers will have an opportunity to golf alongside PGA Tour professionals Jerry Kelly and Dean Wilson, a Castle alumnus, at a free clinic at the Waialae Country Club tomorrow from 4 to 5 p.m.

It is recommended that the public arrive by 3:30 p.m., to allow time for parking and registration. Free parking and shuttle service is available from 3 to 6 p.m. from Hunakai Park. For more information, call 523-7888.

Punahou's Lipsher earns soccer honor

Allison Lipsher has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas 2003 Youth All-America Girls Team.

The team is chosen from club players on the Olympic Development Program regional pool teams. She has been a Region IV pool member the past four years.

Lipsher is a senior goalkeeper at Punahou and plays for the Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club.

Golf tourney will raise funds for Hilo softball

Hui Kako'o Pohili will hold the third annual Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Wahine softball fund drive golf tournament Jan. 25 at the Hawaii Naniloa Country Club.

The format is a two-person modified scramble with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Check-in and a continental breakfast start at 7 a.m.

The entry fee is $70 and the entry deadline is Jan. 20. For more information or tournament applications, call Callen Perreira at 974-7703.

Clubs host women's racquetball competition

The first Women's Pro/Am and U.S. Armed Forces Invitational Racquetball Tournament will be held Jan. 15-18 at the Honolulu Club, Nuuanu YMCA, Central YMCA and Hickam Air Force Base. Most semifinals and all finals will be at the Honolulu Club on Jan. 18.

There are more than 20 players from the Ladies Professional Racquetball Association competing for $34,000 in prize money. The amateur and military divisions include open, A and seniors for men and women.
