Adleta chosen interim Hawaii golf coach
Ashley Adleta was named the interim Hawaii women's golf coach yesterday. Adleta, a former collegiate golfer at Pepperdine and Arizona State, takes over immediately and will hold the post through June.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to take on this responsibility at the University of Hawaii," Adleta said in a university release. "I think Hawaii has great potential to be a very good program, plus the islands have some of the most challenging and beautiful courses in the country."
Adleta was an assistant coach at ASU from 1995 to 2001. Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier appointed Adleta to the position, but she is not a candidate for the full-time position.
Adleta, who was a part of five national championship teams at ASU (two as a player and three as a coach), replaces Marga Stubblefield, who resigned last year.
Rainbow tennis men largely unsuccessful
The Hawaii men's tennis team didn't fare well on the first day of the Flight Tournament on the Big Island. The Warriors were victorious in one of seven singles matches yesterday. Freshman Burke Marold rallied to beat Kal Patrick of William & Mary 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort.
Ryan Sceats, Dalibor Ptak, Bryon Weinberg, Derrick Lajola and Richard Cole lost in straight sets. No Hawaii team won in doubles competition. Marold is the only Hawaii player in the main draw, which begins today. The rest of the team competes in the back draw, also starting today.
