Meyer not making trip for Flyers
Top-ranked Lewis University will open up its NCAA men's volleyball title defense this week at the Outrigger Invitational without junior All-American hitter Gustavo Meyer.
Meyer's eligibility is at the heart of the Flyers' self-reported violation to the NCAA last month. The Mexican national missed the first six matches of last season, including the two losses to Hawaii to open the year.
Lewis coach Dave Deuser said last night that the NCAA investigation is on-going and that school officials were handling the matter, which was deemed a "serious infraction."
The Flyers forfeited 10 victories from the 2002 season over the use of Meyer, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter who has competed for the Mexican National Team. Meyer, the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Championship Tournament, averaged 4.12 kills and hit .429 for the Flyers last year.
Lewis, ranked No. 1 by Volleyball magazine, takes on the University of Manitoba in a 5 p.m. match of the Outrigger Invitational Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center. No. 4 Hawaii takes on No. 8 Penn State in the second match of the three-day, round-robin tournament.
Pepperdine is ranked No. 2, followed by national runner-up Brigham Young.
Rounding out the Top 10 are UC Irvine, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge, Pacific and UCLA.
