WHAT a gratifying feeling it is to have received so many e-mails from all over the world wishing me well after my hip-shattering accident in San Francisco. Typical of the "get well soon messages" was from ex-localite Hank Koppleman, formerly with Outrigger/Reef Hotels. He writes, what a waste of a month's vacation. I hope you recover soon and are 'up and at 'em' around town. My wife and I read your column every day and love to keep in touch with what is happening." He signs it and adds it's from "a person who misses the islands tremendously." ... Lots of messages were also received from local folks as well as others from New Zealand, San Diego, Las Vegas, Tahoe and Oklahoma ...
FORMER isle DJ Kamasami Kong interviewed hot new recording star Melody on his Osaka radio show ... Local computer and direct-marketing maven Paul Klink and business associate Haunani Asing, met up with comedian George Carlin at Hoku's in the Kahala Mandarin. Carlin, who wowed a New Year's Eve crowd at the Blaisdell, was making hilarious pidgin puns that would have broken up Frank DeLima. DeLima is still at the Palace Showroom at the Ohana Reef Towers. But on Fridays and Saturdays, comics Andy Bumatai and Paul Ogata will star in a late-night show ...
Wanda and Eleanor
YOU'VE heard of "A Fish Called Wanda," but how about a delivery truck named Eleanor? That's what Krispy Kreme is calling its 1938 panel delivery truck. It's currently on display at Cutter Chevrolet on Maui, but will soon be zipping around Oahu making deliveries to grocery stores. The first Krispy Kreme will open in Kalihi on Jan. 27 ...
LOCAL poet and writer Kirby Wright will be signing copies of "Before the City" at Barnes and Nobel this Saturday ... Former KHNL reporter Danielle DeLong has been doing some free-lance reporting for NBC News covering the San Bernardino mudslides last week ... IF you missed the New Shanghai Circus when it was last in town, don't make the same mistake again. The gifted troupe returns to the Hawaii Theatre Friday, Saturday and Sunday ...
Schiller thriller
EVERY time local adman Marty Schiller thinks he's busy, he looks at the output of his brother, writer/producer Law-rence Schiller. In recent years Lawrence produced such books as "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town," the Jon Benet Ramsey story, the O.J. Simpson story, and "The Executioner's Song" about the Gary Gilmore saga, among others. He's also been in Hilo filming the first of a series to show on "Court TV," about a cop convicted of killing his wife, which happened 10 years ago ...
GOOD news for friends and fans of artist Peggy Chun, who is living with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. She's back at her painting table in her Nuuanu home and has been learning to paint with her mouth. She has a special paintbrush holder that she holds with her teeth. She now signs her work with a "T" in the corner, for "Teeth." ...
