Al Michaels bids aloha
to the isles
ACTOR Ricardo Montalban, dining at Buzz's Steakhouse in Lanikai, was approached by a gentleman who offered to buy him a drink. Turns out that Montalban had bought this fellow lunch some 20 years ago in less happy times and the man had never forgotten it. (Jan. 8, 1969) ...
THE Hula Bowl: Saturday will be the final game which Al Michaels will broadcast from Honolulu Stadium. The Cincinnati-bound sportscaster estimates he's been behind the mike for some 350 games at the old stadium. "The next game I do in Hawaii," he said, "should be from Halawa." That's the new stadium -- not the jail. (Jan. 6, 1971.) ...
NAKED Lunch: Thursday is the day that Jack Cione does his bit for the ladies or whatever by unveiling naked waiters at the Dunes and featuring nude men in the lunchtime show. Well, we no longer blink when naked females are trotted forth, so why does this strike us as a bit gross? (Jan. 2, 1973.) ...
AN Advertiser reporter was conducting an impromptu interview with Russ Francis in the Aloha Stadium parking lot before the Hula Bowl game, and asked if he were nervous about appearing in the half-time show wearing a malo and carrying a spear. The 6-foot-6 all-pro tight end of the New England Patriots deadpanned, "I just hope my boyfriend doesn't find out about it." (Jan. 9, 1978) ...
FEDERAL Judge Sam King says he's given up the Japanese game of Go to concentrate on computer chess. He's probably thinking of naming his computer Bobby Fischer -- he's had it for about two years, and he's yet to beat it. (Jan. 6, 1982 )...
I did manage to spend a few days on Maui over the holidays and found Don Rickles and Bob Newhart golfing with singer Jerry Vale at Kapalua. Rickles and Newhart often vacation together with their wives and were spending Christmas and New Year's at the Ironwoods -- the plush Kapalua development where Carol Burnett and husband Joe Hamilton reside. (Jan. 5, 1982 ) ...
NOTING that her car horn was on the fritz, Star-Bulletin writer Lois Taylor stopped by the K & Y Service Station at Queen and South streets and asked the young man who greeted her, "Can you make my horn honk?" He didn't miss a beat: "No lady, but I can ring your chimes." (You don't get openings like that every day, you know.) (Jan. 7, 1983) ...
WOULDN'T you know that Miss Burger King would be named Wendy? Wendy Thompson has also been named Hawaii's Modern Miss and is packing for the national Modern Miss pageant in Florida. She'll be sponsored by Pentagram Corp., local Burger King franchise owner. Pity they couldn't find someone named Wendy McDonald. (Jan. 6. 1984) ...
WINEMAKER Robert Mondavi and wife Marguerite have wrapped up a holiday stay at the Mauna Kea along with Virginia and Ernie Van Asperen of the Round Hill winery, makers of the wine President Reagan took to China. The four spent new Year's Eve sampling each others' wine at the Third Floor of the Mauna Lani Bay Resort. (Jan. 4, 1985) ...
DEVELOPER Alan Beall has christened many projects and even a boat -- his "Vid Mia" -- with champagne. But he never saw such a christening as occurred at the opening of the Chart House in his Waterfront Row project in Kona. Seated with sons Brian and Cory and daughter Christy, all home for the holidays, he was among the first to be served at the restaurant's "soft" opening. Well, the cocktail waitress had first night jitters and proceeded to spill an entire tray of drinks into Beall's lap. (Jan. 4, 1989) ...
IN "Entertainment '93," coupon book of activities, attractions and restaurants, are listed menus for participating isle restaurants. Included is the following description of Crab Stuffed Ono at El Crab Catcher: "Stuffed with our special crap stuffing." Think I'll pass. (Jan. 8, 1993) ...
