Werner, McKinley
blow out Thompson

Abel Werner scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half as host McKinley took a huge 43-point lead at the half in an 86-24 blowout of Myron B. Thompson Academy.

It was the first official Oahu Interscholastic basketball game for the Sharks, who debuted in preseason action against Mid-Pacific last month.

But the experienced Tigers were just too much for the newest OIA team.

"They're raw, but they never gave up," McKinley first-year coach Bob Morikuni said about Thompson Academy. "And they never got down, either. They kept their heads up the whole way."

Robert Holder and Quentin Sayers also had 14 points for McKinley. Holder hit two treys in the second half.

Keo Evans-Gonda scored 12 points to lead Thompson Academy, a Honolulu school in which the majority of students do their work over the Internet.

"We're small, but we've got good athletes and are quick," Morikuni said. "But it's going to be a tough road ahead against the Kalaheos, the Moanaluas and the Kaimukis. Everyone is bigger than us. Even Thompson Academy was bigger than us, size-wise. We're going to have to create turnovers and make things happen that way."
