Barron advances in World Junior Championships
Hawaii surfers did not fare well at the Billabong World Junior Championships trials yesterday. Top-seeded Joel Centeio was upset by Australian Leigh Sedley in the opening round at North Narrabeen Beach in Sydney.
Sedley moves directly into the third round after winning his three-man heat. Centeio's loss does not eliminate him from the competition. Second- and third-place finishers will compete in round 2, the elimination round.
TJ Barron scored a 14.5 and was the only Hawaii surfer to advance directly to round 3. Kekoa Bacalso, Nathan Carroll and Jamie O'Brien all ended in second in their respective heats. Sean Moody came in third in his heat.
A purse of $45,000 will be awarded to the winner and the top two finishers will be given berths into the World Qualifying Series to compete for spots on the elite World Championship tour.
