Lee comes back from rare loss
His 42-match winning streak was ended, but NCAA wrestling champion Travis Lee of Honolulu battled back for seven consolation bracket victories in two days to take third place last night at the 41st Midlands Wrestling Championships in Evanston, Ill.
Lee, ranked No. 1 at 133 pounds, was upset by Donald Lockett of San Francisco State 6-5 in his first match on Monday. He defeated Matt Sanchez of Cal State-Bakersfield 10-5 in the third-place match.
Lee, a 2001 Saint Louis School graduate from Liliha, went unbeaten last season in winning the NCAA division I 125-pound championship.
Abrams changes HPU's luck
Aaron Abrams hit a left-handed leaner with three seconds left to give the Hawaii Pacific basketball team a win over Southwestern College (Kan.) 71-70 last night at Mills Gym.
With the Sea Warriors (3-8) down by a point with 13 seconds left, HPU worked the ball to a struggling Abrams for the winning basket.
Brett Annis led the Moundbuilders (5-8) with 14 points.
The Sea Warriors open PacWest play Jan. 6 against Montana State-Billings at the Blaisdell Center.
Noble honored: HPU point guard Marvin Noble was the Pacific West Conference's Player of the Week last week after scoring 23 points against Doane on Monday.
Islanders up against 3 California teams
The Hawaiian Islanders will be placed in a division with the San Diego Riptide, Central Valley Coyotes and Bakersfield Blitz in the 2004 arenafootball2 season, the league announced yesterday.
The Islanders, who will have their full schedule announced in January, shared a division with the Riptide and Blitz last year. This season, the Bakersfield franchise moved to Fresno to become the Central Valley Coyotes while Bakersfield was awarded an expansion franchise and plans to use the same name.
Ponderosa perfect at Iolani Invitational
After 12 years away from the islands, Ponderosa of Shingle Springs, Calif., dominated the Iolani Invitational wrestling tournament last night.
Ponderosa won all eight of its dual matches and averaged more than 60 points in them, dominating the rest of the 19-team field.
Phoenix (N.Y.) took second and host Iolani finished fourth.
Farrington won the girls tournament by beating all four of its opponents. Kamehameha finished in second followed by Moanalua, Kahuku and Iolani.
