MLP land unit chief retiring

Don Young, an executive vice president of Maui Land & Pineapple Co. and president and chief executive of the company's Kapalua Land Co. subsidiary, will retire today, the company said.

Young's duties will be picked up by David Cole, who replaced Gary Gifford in October as the company's permanent president and chief executive. Gifford retired in May, and Young had served as acting chief executive during the search for Gifford's replacement.

In another recent organizational move, Brian Nishida, the former head of Del Monte Fresh Produce (Hawaii) Inc., is taking over tomorrow as president of subsidiary Maui Pineapple Co., replacing Doug Schenk. Schenk, president of Maui Pineapple since 1995, was appointed a consultant for a new business unit.

TheoDavies auto deal closes

The $100 million sale of six TheoDavies Euromotors Inc. dealerships closed yesterday, putting Reed/Jones Acquisition HI LLC in the driver's seat. Hong Kong-based owner Jardine Matheson Co. Ltd. confirmed the sale following a Star-Bulletin report earlier this year. The sale includes TheoDavies' automotive franchises, including Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche and two Honda dealerships on the Big Island.

Reed/Jones is led by Gene Reed, owner of a Toyota and Lexus dealership in Charleston, S.C., and interests in dealerships in Las Vegas and Florida. Fletcher "Ted" Jones Jr. is president and chief executive officer of Fletcher Jones Motorcars Inc., with dealerships in Newport Beach, Calif; Chicago; and Nevada.

Fletcher Jones III, grandson of the company's founder, will be relocating from Chicago to Hawaii as vice president of sales for Mercedes-Benz.

Reed/Jones plans to retain the current management team and employees, Reed said in a statement.

Hawaiian pilots oppose consultant

The Air Line Pilots Association has filed an objection to a move by Hawaiian Airlines' bankruptcy trustee to pay a consultant an estimated $251,640 to redesign Hawaiian's Honolulu Airport terminal operations.

Joshua Gotbaum, Hawaiian's trustee, asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court earlier this month to let him use architecture firm HNTB Corp. to come up with a proposal to consolidate Hawaiian's two Honolulu terminals into a single terminal to save costs.

The union representing Hawaiian pilots, who agreed to $8 million in contract concessions just before Hawaiian filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in March, said the project is too complicated to justify the immediate expense. Hawaiian's bankruptcy costs are approaching $1 million a month, the union said. Earlier this month, the union repeated its demand that Gotbaum release an overdue $4.25 million that is federally required to be paid to the pilots' pension plan.
