Nature programs are
looking for interns

The YCC offers both summer
and year-long positions on five isles

The Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps is expanding to offer both summer and year-round internship programs next year.

Both programs engage participants in hands-on environmental restoration while learning about stewardship, conservation techniques and Hawaii's cultural relationship to the land.

>> The YCC Summer Internship Program, for high school and college students, allows students to work with conservation agencies in a variety of ecosystems to gain a well-rounded view of natural heritage conservation in Hawaii.

Participants receive a monetary stipend and three college credits through the University of Hawaii (if eligible). All transportation, lodging and food expenses are paid for by YCC.

Both member and team leader positions are available on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and the Big Island.

Members must be at least incoming high school juniors and no older than incoming college juniors, with no experience necessary. Team Leaders must be at least 21 and have prior leadership and/or environmental conservation experience. Internships will run from June 14 through July 30; team leaders start a week earlier. Application deadline is March 1.

The YCC summer program is provided by the state Department of Land & Natural Resources, Kamehameha Schools' 'Aina Ulu program, Pono Pacific and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

>> YCC Year-round Internship Program, for participants 18 to 30 years old, offers a more in-depth conservation experience. Participants will work alongside field experts in one or two DLNR divisions, including Na Ala Hele (trails), Natural Area Reserves, Wildlife, the Invasive Species Committees and Forestry. Positions are available on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and the Big Island.

YCC year-round interns receive a living allowance in addition to approximately $5,000 in an education award. The educational award can be applied to future college education expenses or to pay off past student loans. Year-round applications are being accepted through Jan. 15.

The year-long program is funded by DLNR and the AmeriCorps Corp. and is managed by Pono Pacific.

Applications for both programs can be downloaded at www.hawaiiycc.com or requested at the YCC/Pono Pacific office on Oahu at 247-5753.
