The Best Photos of 2003

At any moment, something could happen to change a life forever. This photo tells of such a moment. Bethany Hamilton lost an arm to a shark while surfing. But what makes her story so remarkable is that she survives and she doesn't give up. That takes a lot of courage. Tom Hamilton, her father, sat next to her as she recounted her story.

Team New Zealand/Hawaii almost lost it off Diamond Head when it strayed too close to shore and barely made it over a wave. One team member said, "That was a little sketchy."Still, the team took top honors in this year's Hawaii Modular Space Molokai Hoe.

Ronen Zilberman

Two-year-old Tiare Talo rested on her mother Suzanne Leha-Talo's shoulder outside the Women and Families Shelter in Honolulu. Leha-Talo is talking to Tiare's father, Vito Talo.

This image was taken during the centennial anniversary of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I in October. The royal societies are a privilege to photograph because each of their events marks an important occasion in Hawaiian history. Here, Margaret Stafford, Eloise Bruns, Donna Lei Smythe and Mary Ann Crowell of Ahahui Ka'ahumanu waited to present their ho'okupu at the Kalakaua Tomb.

I was driving down the parking garage at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki, and thought the downward spiral might make a cool photo. So I drove to the top and looked down. Not bad, just needs an element, like a car or something. So I waited for an hour for someone to drive along at just the right place in the frame.

Craig T. Kojima

The waves were just 4 feet at Sandy Beach on this bright day, but conditions were good enough for the boogie boarders. This picture captures both joy and athleticism on a sunny day at the beach.

FL Morris

I love the dart-like graphic qualities of this image. This is the Air Force Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Team performing precision flying during "Friends and Neighbors Weekend" at Hickam Air Force Base.

A Hawaiian Stilt hunts down breakfast in a marsh along the shores of Pearl Harbor. Photographing these birds is a challenge. They're skittish, and dash off at any hint of trouble. Then the light and composition have to be just right. It was a while before I could creep up close enough, and it was some time before the bird finally decided I wasn't a threat. And it took even longer for him to step into a good spot in the pond. It was a test of patience and somewhat therapeutic, a nice departure from the hectic pace of modern life.

George F. Lee

Candles are raised in honor of those who fell fighting for the freedom of others as helicopters fly a missing-man formation during candle-lighting ceremonies at Punchbowl.
