Makin' mochi
Mochi-pounding is a new year's tradition that's difficult to pull off on an individual basis -- what with all the time and muscle needed, not to mention all that rice and special equipment.
The solution is a group pounding -- Mochitsuki 2003 -- to be held at the Honbushin International Center, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
Families are invited to pound and shape mochi to take home, under the supervision of veterans. It's free, but space is limited, so early arrival is encouraged.
There will also be entertainment in the form of taiko drumming, karaoke, a harmonica band and hula, along with food booths and a produce sale.
The Honbushin is off of Kamehameha Highway between Mililani and Wahiawa, at 95-030 Waihonu St. Call 623-7693.
