Kadomatsu brings luck
Star-Bulletin staff
Celebrate "Kadomatsu, A New Year's Festival," with TEMARI Saturday at the Ward Warehouse amphitheater. This is the 20th year that the Center for Asian and Pacific Arts will be making and selling the traditional bamboo and pine arrangements intended to bring good luck for the coming year, the year of the monkey.
Events run 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with kadomatsu available from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
According to tradition, "gate pines" are placed at the entrance of homes and public spaces to welcome the god Toshigami, who brings blessings while making his abode among the pine branches.
This year, participants can observe the making of plantation kadomatsu, practice other local new Year rituals such as printing a red fish, writing good luck kanji and making a monkey mask to avoid evil.
For the first time, Izumo Taishakyo Temple will offer Shinto objects to purify your house, guard your car and keep you safe. The Rev. Daiya Amano will explain these omamori.
Entertainment will include taiko and Chinese lion dance performances. Admission is free. For more information or to order a kadomatsu, call 536-4566.
