Brigham Young-Hawaii beats Division I Baylor

Shawn Opunui put up 34 points and Jake Chrisman added 20 as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Baylor 72-67 yesterday in the Surf 'N Slam Tournament in Laie.

The Seasiders hadn't beaten a Division I team since 2001, when they did it twice with wins over Columbia and New Mexico State.

BYUH won yesterday despite falling behind by 12, 35-23, at the half. Opunui hit 10 of his 14 field-goal attempts, including 6-for-8 on 3-pointers, and all eight of his free throws.

Silverswords lose on road: Host Cal State Bakersfield routed Chaminade 67-46 yesterday at the State Farm Roadrunner Classic. Eddie Shelby led the Roadrunners with 14 points, going 2-for-2 from 3-point land. Nick Frey and Roy Stigall each scored nine points for Chaminade, which was held to 12 points in the first half.

Sugai honored by NSCAA

Joelle Sugai, a junior midfielder for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team, has been named to the 2003 All-West Region Scholar third team sponsored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a junior with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and must have started more than 50 percent of the team's matches.

Sugai was one of three players to start all 20 matches this year. Sugai had three assists and is tied for third all-time at UH in that category with 13 assists. Last month, Sugai was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII women's first team. The Aiea graduate is a two-time UH scholar athlete.

Knights are big winners in Shop and Score

Castle High School was this year's top scorer in the Kraft Shop and Score sports equipment program.

About 40 schools participated in the annual program to receive a share of a $50,000 credit to buy uniforms and equipment based on the number of points earned by purchasing Kraft products at Times Supermarkets on Oahu.

Castle earned more than $8,000 worth of points. Depending on the equipment available, Castle athletic director Richard Haru said he wants to obtain new uniforms for the boys and girls volleyball and soccer teams, the girls tennis and softball teams and the football teams.
