Reckless Olomana driver
not yet charged, case led
to road barriers

Question: What ever happened to the 19-year-old man whose car crossed the center line of Kalanianaole Highway near Olomana Golf Links on Feb. 23 and collided with another car, killing the Waimanalo man who was driving?

Answer: Honolulu police recently completed their investigation of the accident and have turned the case over to the city prosecutor's office.

No charges have been filed.

According to police, speed and alcohol were factors in the accident that took place at 4:30 a.m. near the curve on Kalanianaole Highway fronting Olomana Golf Links. A negligent-homicide case had been opened early in the investigation.

Ramus Seabury, 62, who was killed in the crash, had been driving to Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, where he worked as a cart attendant at Clipper Golf Course, when the accident happened.

The 19-year-old driver's father and Seabury were friends who used to play golf together.

Following complaints from the Waimanalo community and Seabury's family about safety on the highway, the state Department of Transportation installed rumble strips and concrete barriers on the Kailua end of the curve to prevent further accidents.

Residents, including the Seabury family, have complained the barriers are not located where accidents have occurred. DOT officials have said the barriers will not fit in the curve.

The accident that killed Seabury was near the site of another accident on Jan. 2, 2001, which killed Lorrie-Ann Wiley.

Kam Williams was sentenced in January to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in Wiley's death. Williams was driving drunk at the time of the crash.
