W is for watch
A child doesn't run his life by the time of day, but the long-standing Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch has been making Flik Flaks, a special line for kids, since 1987. The company enlisted Swiss psychologists and educators to help develop the watches, making it as easy as possible for children ages 3 and up to tell time.
Flik Flak watches are available in Baby World, Pre-School and the more fashion-conscious School Days categories. The water-resistant, tyke-friendly timepieces have precision quartz movements and scratch-resistant glass, and come with educational cardboard watches with detachable hands.

Designs now available include "The Little Polar Bear," a popular European children's character. The watch, with the inquisitive little bear on the strap, comes in a book containing a jigsaw puzzle showing the bear relaxing in the sea.
For the sophisticated little girl in your life, "Perles en Folie" is predominantly pink with a band made of three beaded strands. It comes with four boxes of beads in three shades of pink and transparent white -- 600 beads in all -- plus three pink elastic bands for making straps, necklaces or spare watch wristlets.
Local Swatch store manager Craig Galvin also notes the Flik Flak watch called "Blazing Star," that he describes as "all red with white flowers, with kind of a Hawaii feel."
The line retails at $23 to $35. The local Swatch USA store is in the Outrigger Hotel. Call 922-1401.
