Panthers need 2 OTs
to defeat Mustangs


Jason Rich's 28 points pushed visiting Dr. Phillips past Kalaheo in double overtime in an Iolani Classic first-round game last night.

Rich also pulled down nine rebounds and went 7-for-9 from the line while playing the whole game for the Panthers of Orlando, Fla.

Kalaheo's Sam Wilhoite had a team-high 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He was the only other player to play the full 40 minutes.

The Mustangs led 37-34 heading to the fourth period, but trailed by three late in the game when William Elliott hit a clutch 3-pointer to tie it at 52-all to send the game into overtime.

Trey Hopkins' 3-pointer broke a 59-59 tie early in the second overtime as the Panthers took the lead for good.

Dr. Phillips plays the nation's top-ranked team, Oak Hill of Mouth of Wilson, Va., tonight at 8 in the quarterfinals. Kalaheo plays Kapolei today at 3:30.

Oak Hill 87, Kapolei 39: Josh Smith scored 22 points and KC Rivers added 17 as the Warriors pulled away from the Hurricanes early.

Warren Simanu popped in 10 points and Brad Padayao added eight points and a game-high five rebounds for Kapolei.

Fairfax 104, Waimea 25: The two-time defending champion Lions got 30 points from Joshua Shipp and six rebounds from Jamal Clay to pound the Menehunes.

Lanikai Kanahele led Waimea with four points and four rebounds.

Fairfax held the Menehunes to fewer than 10 points in each quarter. The Lions, ranked 18th, play St. John's of Washington, D.C., in a quarterfinal tonight at 6:30.

Mt. Vernon 61, Fairley 55: Keith Benjamin scored 27 points and made six steals in just 27 minutes as the Knights from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., broke open a close game by outscoring the Bulldogs 21-15 in the final period.

The teams headed to the fourth quarter tied 40-all.

Jonathan Mitchell had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Knights, who play No. 7 Montrose Christian in a 6:30 p.m. semifinal tomorrow.

Reginald Owens had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Fairley of Memphis, Tenn.

Fairley takes on Iolani tomorrow at 3:30 for the right to play for fifth place on Saturday.
