Woman missing after
canoe is blown to sea

LAHAINA >> A Coast Guard vessel and helicopter were searching last night for a 33-year-old Lahaina woman who was last seen in a canoe being blown out to sea off Kapalua in West Maui.

The Coast Guard at Maalaea was still gathering information and unsure whether the woman returned to shore or was missing at sea, said Daniel O'Donoghue, a Coast Guard fireman. He said the Coast Guard planned to continue the search into the night.

Maui County Assistant Fire Chief Greg Chong Kee said two women had launched a two-person canoe at Napili Bay yesterday afternoon, when a wave came toward them.

Chong Kee said one woman jumped out of the canoe to turn it to face the wave but was separated from her companion. The woman swam to shore, and fire officials received a call for help at 3:10 p.m. yesterday.
