NONA BEAMER IS HONORED AT DUKE'S

art
GREAT MEMORIES: Bandmaster Aaron Mahi of the Royal Hawaiian Band represented Mayor Jeremy Harris when Duke's Waikiki presented Nona Beamer with its Ho'okahiko Award last Thursday. The award is presented each year to a person who "exemplifies the finest traditions of Hawaii." Mahi recalled how she had shared her knowledge of Hawaiiana when he was one of her students at the Kamehameha Schools.

CONGRATULATIONS, AUNTY!: Puamana Crabbe of "power muumuu" fame, left, and Peter Rockford Espiritu congratulated Nona Beamer after the ceremony. Neither of her sons was there, but Keola was involved in getting her to go to Duke's to "meet some friends."

TALKING STORY: Nona Beamer talked with Ross Anderson, general manager of Duke's Waikiki, as the surprise party wound down and she had a chance to eat. The Lilikoi Family trio provided music for the formal ceremony, and she delighted the crowd by dancing a hula. Galen Fox represented the state House of Representatives, and Anderson read messages from Gov. Linda Lingle and U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka.
