Record-setting freshman Lisa Franke of Bethel College in Indiana was named a first-team All-American by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) on Thursday.
Franke, a 2003 Kealakehe High School graduate from Kailua-Kona, was the only freshman named to the women's soccer first team.
She set Bethel season records of 33 goals and 72 points (she had six assists).
"Lisa gave us the scoring threat that we had been missing," Bethel coach Pete Morey said.
Franke previously received honorable mention All-America and first-team all region from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and all-conference from the Mid-Central Collegiate Conference. She was conference player of the week twice.
Coaches voted on all the awards.
Nearly half of Bethel's starting lineup was from Hawaii. Twins Maile and Malia Carenio (both 2001 Waiakea High School graduates from Volcano) started at left and right outside halfback and senior basketball player Mayumi Stevens (Moanalua '00) "was probably our most consistent player," lending great speed to the midfield, Morey said.
Freshman midfielder Katy Jenkins, who was home-schooled on Kauai, missed much of the season with a knee injury.
Bethel, which is in Mishawaka, Ind., finished 11-9.
Wrestling rankings: Cornell junior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) remains No. 1 at 133 pounds and Iowa State sophomore Grant Nakamura (Baldwin '01) has moved up to No. 6 at 125 pounds in the newest InterMat Wrestling rankings for NCAA Division I.
Lee solidified his grip on No. 1 with an 11-9 victory over No. 2 Josh Moore of Penn State in the championship match of the Mat Town Invitational. Lee was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the event. He has not lost since the 2001-02 season.
Nakamura moved up after a 7-5 loss to second-ranked Luke Eustice of Iowa. Nakamura's Iowa State team is ranked second to Oklahoma State.
In the first regular-season rankings released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association, San Francisco State senior Joey Bareng (Moanalua '00) is No. 8 at 125 pounds with a 6-6 record.
Volleyball: Loyola Marymount senior volleyball player Kea Kimball (Kamehameha '00 of Kaunakakai) has made perhaps her final all-star team -- and one of the most satisfying.
Kimball was the only athlete from Hawaii in any sport who earned a spot on the All-West Coast Conference Academic team for fall sports.
Kimball, a business major, has a 3.32 grade-point average.
